The burnishing process with stainless steel shot is quite successful in producing excellent results. It deburrs many types of flaws in metal such as rust and tarnish and it does this quite well.

Stainless Steel Shot

Stainless steel shot (304 Stainless) is the way to go as an effective cleaning agent in a tumbler for metal such as brass and jewelry. It is reusable and really gets in all the nooks and crannies. This is because of its multi faceted shape and structure. Leaving no angle undetermined it adapts is positioning in the tumbler barrel to contact all pieces and all areas of the metal that needs to be polished.

Tips on Using Shot

Only fill the water in your barrel to cover the material to be burnished and the steel shot. Make sure the shot is clean before use. Shot can sometime pick up a film. Generally it takes about 30 minutes to an hour to burnish most metals. Sometimes two passes are necessary.
