Rock Tumblers – the original AI agent

Vintage wind-up tin robot toy with dials and gauges on its chest

Everyone is talking about AI agents: software you hand a job to, which then works on its own until the job is done. Rock tumbler owners have been working this way for decades.

Load it, switch it on, walk away

An AI agent gets a goal and the materials it needs, then runs while you get on with your day. A rock tumbler is very much the same. You fill the barrel with rough rock, grit and water, turn on the power and let it do its thing.

Then it works. Day and night, for days on end, it turns sharp, dull stones into the glossy finished stones you were hoping for. It does all of this in the background while you go to work, make dinner and sleep. No prompts, no supervision, just a steady rumble from the garage.

The leap a tumbler hasn’t made yet

A true agent doesn’t just run. It checks its own progress and changes course. For now, that part of tumbling is still your job: you open the barrel, rinse a few stones and decide whether they are ready for the next grit.

Imagine a tumbler that could make that leap and evaluate the stones between stages on its own. It could:

  • Adjust the run time: add three more days of coarse grind when a few stones still have pits, or end a stage early when they are done.
  • Know when to move on: tell you it is time to rinse and switch to the next grit.
  • Change how it tumbles: slow down for softer stones, or suggest more filler when the load gets light.
  • Catch problems early: notice a barrel running low on water or a slurry that has turned to mud.

The AI tumbler can wait

Well, perhaps in the future we’ll have a truly AI rock tumbler. But I think the AI clothes dryer comes first. Any machine that can work out why one sock is still damp while the towels are bone dry has earned its place at the front of the line.

For now, you’re the smart part

Until the robots catch up, the judgment between stages is yours, and good instructions make it easy. For the best tumbling results, follow our step-by-step instructions for your project.
