Aluminum oxide 1000 grit is a finer pre-polish that bridges the gap between silicon carbide 500 and the final polish. It smooths out the fine scratches left by the 500 step, so your stones go into the polish with a smoother surface and come out brighter.
Common uses:
- The extra pre-polish step: after silicon carbide 500 pre-polish, before aluminum oxide super fine polish.
- Softer stones: obsidian, turquoise and other stones that scratch easily do better with a gentler step before polish. Read how to tumble softer stones.
- Fixing a hazy polish: rerun the batch in 1000 grit, then polish again.
- Rotary or vibratory: works in both.
Available in three sizes:
- 4 ounce
- 7 ounce
- 11 ounce
How much to use: about 2 tablespoons per pound of rock in a rotary tumbler, with plastic pellets to cushion the load, for about 7 days. Clean the barrel and stones well before this step: a single grain of coarser grit can scratch the batch. See our grit stages guide.
The abrasive media is shipped in a plastic resealable bag.
Keep Tumbling!
