Silicon carbide 500 is the pre-polish for step three of the four-step rock tumbling process. It removes the fine scratches left by 120/220 grit and leaves stones with a smooth, soft satin sheen, ready for the final polish to bring up the brightest finish.
Common uses:
- Step three of the standard sequence: after coarse and medium/fine grit, before aluminum oxide polish.
- Rescuing a hazy batch: rerun the pre-polish with fresh grit, then polish again.
- Vibratory finishing: works in vibratory tumblers for stones that are already shaped.
- Metal finishing: fine deburring and smoothing of metal parts and jewelry findings.
Available in three sizes:

- 11 ounce
How much to use: about 2 tablespoons per pound of rock in a rotary tumbler, with plastic pellets to cushion the load, for about 7 days. In a vibratory tumbler, use about 1 ounce for a 3 to 5 lb load. Not intended for polishing precious gemstones. See our grit stages guide.
