Silicon carbide 80 is a single grade grit: graded to one particle size rather than blended from two, so it cuts evenly and predictably. At 80 mesh it sits between our coarse 60/90 and medium/fine 120/220 grits, which makes it a versatile in-between step.
Common uses:
- A bridge step between coarse and medium: after 36, 46/70 or 60/90, a week in 80 removes deep coarse scratches so the 120/220 step finishes faster and more evenly.
- A gentler first step: for stones that are already fairly smooth, or softer stones where 60/90 would take off too much.
- Rounding glass: a controlled grit for taking sharp edges off bottle glass when making tumbled sea glass.
- Re-running a batch: clean up scratches left by the coarse step without starting over.
- Lapping and grinding: medium-coarse flat lapping and other general grinding work.
Available in three sizes:
- 7 ounce
- 11 ounce
- 15 ounce
How much to use: about 2 tablespoons per pound of rock in a rotary tumbler, with water just below the top layer of stones. Run about 7 days, then check the stones dry before moving on. See our grit stages guide and how much grit to use.
The abrasive media is shipped in a plastic resealable bag.
