Silicon carbide 36 is our extra coarse graded grit, the most aggressive grit we sell. It is made for the heaviest shaping work: taking down very rough, angular rock and large pieces quickly before the standard coarse step.
Common uses:
- Very rough, angular rough rock: freshly broken or quarried pieces with sharp corners and deep pits.
- Large or oversized pieces: stones that need a lot of material removed before they will tumble evenly.
- Hard stones with thick rinds: agate, jasper and petrified wood with rough skins that take too long in finer grits.
- Saving time: run a week in 36 to do the heavy shaping, then move on to 46/70 or 60/90 to smooth out its scratches.
- Coarse lapping and grinding: fast stock removal on flat laps and other coarse grinding jobs.
Available in three sizes:
- 7 ounce
- 11 ounce
- 14 ounce
How much to use: about 2 tablespoons per pound of rock in a rotary tumbler, with water just below the top layer of stones. Check the stones after a few days, and move on to a finer coarse grit once the heavy shaping is done. Extra coarse grit is for rotary tumblers, which do the shaping. See our grit stages guide for choosing a coarse grit.
The abrasive media is shipped in a plastic resealable bag.
