Silicon carbide 46/70 is a fast-cutting coarse grit for the first, shaping step of rock tumbling. It sits between our 36 extra coarse and 60/90 coarse grits: it removes material faster than 60/90 and leaves a slightly finer surface than 36, so it suits a wide range of rough rock.
Common uses:
- Hard, rough rock: agate, jasper, quartz and petrified wood with rough skins, sharp edges or pits that need real shaping.
- Speeding up the coarse step: start a batch of angular rough in 46/70 to round it off faster, then finish the coarse step in 60/90 if you like.
- Mixed loads of rough: a good all-round first grit when a batch has both fairly smooth and very rough pieces.
- Re-running coarse: stones that still show pits or rough spots after a week can go back for another round.
- Lapping and grinding: coarse flat lapping and other general grinding work.
Available in three sizes:
- 7 ounce
- 11 ounce
- 15 ounce
How much to use: about 2 tablespoons per pound of rock in a rotary tumbler, with water just below the top layer of stones. Run about 7 days, then check the stones dry and repeat with fresh grit if needed. Coarse grits are for rotary tumblers, which do the shaping; vibratory tumblers are best for stones that are already shaped. See our grit stages guide and how much grit to use.
The abrasive media is shipped in a plastic resealable bag.
